Published Mar 24, 2018

Do you have a HECS-HELP debt after graduating from a course in mathematics, science, education, nursing or early childhood education?  If so, you may be eligible for the HECS-HELP benefit.

The only way to claim the HECS-HELP benefit is by lodging a separate form with the tax office. You cannot claim the benefit in your tax return. While the HECS-HELP benefit will be removed from 1 July 2017, it’s not too late to lodge your application for the:

  • 2015/2016 financial year. You must lodge your application by the 30 June 2018;
  • 2016/2017 financial year. You must lodge your application by the 30 June 2019.

To find out whether you are eligible for the HECS-HELP benefit go to https://www.ato.gov.au/Forms/HECS-HELP-benefit---Overview/. Here you will be able to answer the questions on the checklist and complete the form.

You may be eligible to claim more than one benefit however you must meet all the requirements for each different type of benefit. The best time to complete the form is before you lodge your tax return, but you can still lodge the form after you have lodged your tax return.
